If there are those who like to get on the escalator and lean on the right, there are also those who, out of haste or preference, like to (usually) on the left, climb the steps to the top. However, since the beginning of October, there has been a Japanese city where the second option is no longer an option.
Local authorities in Nagoya have issued orders prohibiting people from climbing escalators, to avoid accidents or possible falls.
Until now, everyone could do what they preferred, but cases of people losing their balance and falling, dragging others along the way, were multiplying, and even as measures were taken to promote the act of staying still on escalators, the effects on residents were feared. For the elderly and people with disabilities, results were poor.
Between 2018 and 2019 alone, more than 800 accidents occurred due to “improper use” of escalators, according to data provided by The Japan Times.
At the same time as this measure was implemented, a major propaganda campaign was launched, especially on public transportation in the Japanese city. “Let’s stop and stand on the left or right side,” and “When using escalators, stop and use the left and right sides of the stairs. It’s your duty!”, warned several posters in Nagoya.
Although unusual, this is not the first time this measure has been adopted in Japan: the city of Saitama put very similar rules into effect in October 2021.
