The celebration of World Rabies Day, Thursday (28), aims to raise awareness of the importance of vaccinating dogs and cats against this disease, which is considered one of the most dangerous deadly diseases, as nearly 100% of those infected with it, including humans, die from the disease. . This hypothesis becomes even more necessary when one notes that in recent years, animal vaccination has seen a decline in the commitment of those responsible for it – including in the municipality. Because although 33,159 applications were submitted in Petropolis throughout 2021, the following year coverage fell to 29,962, reaching only 62.9% of animals. Data are from the Rio de Janeiro State Department of Health (SES-RJ), coming from the State Epidemiological Surveillance Subsecretariat.
In the partial comparison between last year and the current year, information from the coordination of environmental monitoring, this information from the Municipal Health Department (SMS), shows that compliance has increased by only 2% so far – because in the first four phases that were implemented and this year, Vaccinating 12,582 animals, while during the same period, only in 2022, there were 12,236 animals. What becomes even more worrying is when it is noted that the number of animals in the municipality has increased alarmingly in recent years: going from 38 thousand dogs and cats in 2021, to more than 47 thousand in 2022, according to the SES-RJ environmental monitoring coordination.
This Saturday (30), the Municipal Health Department will carry out the sixth phase of rabies vaccination for animals, which will serve residents of the communities of Takara, Independencia, Centro, Kitandina, Cimmeria, São Sebastião, Castellaña, Duchas, Vila. Felipe, Chacara Flora, Sargento Boinge and Mio da Serra. There will be 31 vaccination points that will submit the application. “By vaccinating our dogs and cats, we also protect the population from human rabies, which is transmitted to humans through the saliva of infected animals,” said the Ministry’s Secretary, Marcos Corvelo, throughout this year’s campaign.

Veterinarian Talha Perez, coordinator of zoonotic disease surveillance in Rio de Janeiro, confirms that vaccinating pets protects humans. “Rabies is a zoonotic disease, and it is 100% fatal. We have very few cases to survive, and even then people remain in a vegetative state. So, it is important to always be careful, and it is important that everyone does their part, and takes the animal to be vaccinated “.
Vaccination has led to a significant decline in confirmed cases of animal rabies in the country in recent years. While in 2002, for example, more than 700 cases were detected in dogs and cats in Brazil, more recently, in 2021, 21 cases of rabies have been confirmed in dogs and cats. In 2022, 16 cases were confirmed, according to the Ministry of Health.
Regarding human rabies cases, from 2010 to 2023, 47 cases have been diagnosed in humans to date. Two of them this year alone. Of the total, nine were attacked by dogs, 24 by bats, five by non-human primates, two by foxes, four by cats, and one by livestock. In two of them it was not possible to determine what type of animal was attacking. they. In the historical series, only two cases progressed to treatment. The rest died.
