The attacker was detained at the Erasmus University Medical Centre, where the second shooting took place. The first shooting occurred in an apartment about 1.5 kilometers away.
In addition to the two shooting incidents, there were also two fires that may have been started by the attacker.
The police told the press that it appears that the person acted alone for reasons that are still unknown. The 32-year-old man was wearing “combat” clothing and carrying a backpack.
The 32-year-old shot a 39-year-old woman and seriously wounded a 14-year-old teen in an apartment and then set it on fire.
He then went to Erasmus University, where he killed a 46-year-old teacher in a classroom and started a new fire.
Both fires started with cocktails Molotov.
Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Abu Taleb said: “We were shocked by this horrific incident. Shots were fired in two different places in the city. Many people witnessed what happened.”
According to the police, the suspect was a student at the university and was known to the authorities in a previous case related to animal abuse.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed his “deep dismay.”
“My thoughts are with the victims of this attack, with their loved ones and with all those who were so afraid,” he wrote on the social network
