The National Health Service (SNS) is in a long and profound crisis. SNS CEO Fernando Araujo acknowledged the crisis, saying on the fourth: “SNS cannot continue as it is. It is facing serious difficulties and we have to prepare for the future.”
It is healthy that the person most responsible for the health sector, immediately after Minister Manuel Pizarro, is aware of the problems of the Syrian National Party, which are getting worse. It is also positive that Fernando Araújo has brought forward an important reform – the biggest reform of the NHS in 44 years, said F. Araejo.
This includes the establishment of 31 new Local Health Units (ULS), which join the eight already in place, starting January 1, 2024. The SNS Executive Director stated that it is a well-founded and structured reform.
F warned. Araujo stressed that this reform is “complex and demanding” and will take some time to implement on the ground. The CEO also stressed that the changes are not only administrative, but will help SNS.
Naturally, the authors of the reform praised it. The problem is that many doubts remain about what will change. For this reason, potential critics of the reform avoided passing judgment, citing a lack of information. Let’s look at some examples.
What will the reform do on the financial level, given that doctors have not accepted the wages offered to them by the government? This is a vital point, as many doctors have left the NHS, unhappy with their salaries.
On the other hand, let us hope that doctors’ wages are not partly tied to behaviors that medical ethics would reject, such as paying better wages to those who send more patients.
The 31 new local health units will include all groups of health centres, numbering more than 40, and are a significant part of the functions of the five regional health departments and the five hospitals in the public administrative sector. How will good management of ULS be possible, if such management fails, for example, in hospitals?
I admit that Fernando Arajo has a complete answer to these and other questions. Simply put, a broad discussion of the “biggest reform” ever in the Syrian National Party is urgent. It is important that not only those who have contributed to this reform, which will take effect in just over three months, speak up.
