Rui Pinto benefited from the amnesty law in more than 70 crimes and escaped effective prison sentences, but the law that was approved on the first day of September is still far from translating all of its results, especially with regard to amnesty for prison sentences. He has already been convicted. Judges are still hearing the cases, and there are doubts and different understandings about applying the amnesty. Prisoners have already been released thanks to this law, and one of those who can still benefit from the arrival of Pope Francis in Portugal is João Carrera. The young man who planned the attack on the College of Science and who was sentenced at the end of last year to two years and nine months in prison. His lawyer sent a request to the court last week, but has not yet received a response.
Rui Pinto was given a four-year suspended prison sentence, but he was not freed to return to court, as another charge had already been filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) – this time, for 377 offences. For now, while it has not been revealed whether the MP, his aides, or the hackers’ defense will appeal the decision, the question remains: Did the arrival of Pope Francis save Rui Pinto from an effective prison sentence?
