Gmail will now require additional verification to change certain types of account settings that are sensitive. The change is intended to strengthen users’ security against hackers and was announced by Google on Wednesday (23).
According to Google, the additional protection will apply to attempts to create, modify, or import filters and add a new forwarding address in your Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings. Enabling IMAP through Settings will also turn on the email service beep.
When you perform one of these actions, the system will perform an immediate evaluation. If you consider this to be a risky situation, it will require the user to prove that they are the owner of this account through the “Verify your identity” notice.
In this case, Gmail will require recognition of a second device, through 2-Step Verification, so that the user can complete the required action by verifying their identity. This may include sending an SMS to the cell phone registered to the profile, for example.

If the verification required by Gmail does not complete successfully, changes to settings will not be released. In addition, the account owner will receive a “Critical Security Alert” on their trusted devices informing them of any possible suspicious activity.

The new Gmail security feature is being rolled out gradually, and it may take up to 15 days to reach all free users. For those with a Google Workspace subscription, the tool will be offered starting September 6, and should be released within a maximum of three days.
