oh Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been invited to the UK, the Saudi Embassy in London said.
A British government source (who has yet to publicly confirm the invitation), quoted by the BBC, said the country’s prime minister hopes to meet the crown prince “as soon as possible.” The meeting is expected to take place in the first half of October.
If implemented, it would be the first visit by a Saudi prince to the United Kingdom since the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul.
The killing sparked international controversy, and led to the British government acquitting 20 Saudis involved in the case.
While Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already spoken to Bin Salman, the BBC reveals that talks about the meeting should take place a month in advance.
Saudi Arabia has strong trade links with the United Kingdom, the most famous of which is arguably domestic football. After all, the Newcastle United club was bought by a Saudi fund in 2021.
