The state of Minas Gerais ended the first half of the year with 5.7 million beneficiaries of hospital medical and health plans, a record for the state. The volume of adhesions grew by 2.7% in 12 months, an increase of 151.1 thousand new contracts, above the national average (2.2%).
According to information from Special Analysis of Beneficiary Accompanying Note (NAB) #84, developed by the Institute for Complementary Health Studies (it’s me), Minas has the second highest coverage rate in Brazil (27%), second only to São Paulo.
The number of contracts registered in the state is the highest since the beginning of the historical series, when the National Agency for Complementary Health (ANS) began recording data in 2000. The coverage rate of Minas Gerais residents in complementary health care is 27%, two percentage points above the national average (25%) .
In the case of the new contracts, the state of Minas Gerais provided an increase of 684,000 beneficiaries between June 2020 and June 2023. This progress occurred after a period of stability during the previous years, when there were 5 million.
On the other hand, group business plans grew by 4.3% in 12 months, favoring the overall result of subscriptions which rose from 3.9 million beneficiaries in June 2022 to 4.1 million in the same month this year.
For José Cechin, executive supervisor of IESS, collective business plans were largely responsible for the well-recorded performance in the state.
“We had a decrease in individual or family and group membership plans. However, on the other hand, business employment was very good, well above the national average, and contributed to a good result in the state,” he says.
It should be noted that this type of health plan tends to monitor the number of formal workers based on data from the Public Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged). In this case, Minas has recorded a positive balance in recent months. Between June last year and 2023, the state saw a 3.9% growth in the number of jobs.
