Waze is a great map service, but the Android Auto version is currently dealing with an issue where dashboard directions are stuck on some BMWs.
Waze is angry at BMWs on Android Auto
Waze on Android Auto has had its share of issues over the years, but the latter at least only affects a small subset of vehicles. In cars from BMW and some other brands, there is an alert screen, as shown below, that appears on the windshield instead of the traditional screen. BMW allows the car’s software, including Android Auto, to integrate into this screen to show turn-by-turn directions, as seen in the image below and revealed by 9to5Google.
Over the past week, a number of BMW owners have noticed that Waze for Android Auto no longer displays these directions as it once did. This is despite Google Maps still working, which means this is a problem with Waze, not Android Auto.
Apparently, Waze only displays a “route calculation” on the display, instead of the actual directions that Android Auto sends.
In a comment, a member of the Android Auto team confirmed that the team is looking into the issue. However, there is still no word on a fix.
However, there were a few takedowns on Waze that didn’t happen to everyone. This relates to the different reports that we can provide on the platform. Whether it be radars, police or something else. Some people are looking for certain functionality or to access advanced features that are simply gone. This is when the driver might still be around. The causes are not well known but many believe it could be tests. It’s still strange that the updates don’t bring big news.
