Joe Biden meets with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and King Charles III ahead of the NATO summit in Lithuania. London and Washington have different levels of cluster bombs.
US President Joe Biden arrived in the UK on Sunday night ahead of a NATO summit in Lithuania and a trip to Finland.
Biden is expected to hold talks with British Prime Minister Rishi Chung and meet King Charles III for the first time since he became king.
The suspension is a diplomatic gesture of goodwill, but comes as Biden announced the deployment of controversial cluster bombs to Ukraine.
Many NATO members oppose the use of these types of munitions and Prime Minister Sunak has already made Britain’s position clear.
“The UK is a signatory to a convention banning the manufacture or use of cluster munitions and discouraging their use. We will continue to do our part to support Ukraine against its illegal and unprovoked invasion of Russia, but we have done so. Main battle tanks and, more recently, long-range weapons, and all countries We hope that we can continue to support Ukraine,” UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.
During his stay in the United Kingdom, President Biden should also raise concerns about the challenges the post-Brexit period poses to the peace process in Northern Ireland.
But when you go to Lithuania, you’re asked about sending cluster bombs to Ukraine that cause indiscriminate civilian casualties.
Ukraine’s application for membership is also on NATO’s agenda.
