It took fifth place in the ranking and it is not difficult to understand why. If you haven’t visited it before, now you have another reason to do so.
Who knew that a street called Luís de Camões could be considered one of the most beautiful in the world? The poet, known above all for the epic work “Os Lusíadas”, is one of the greatest figures in Portuguese-language literature and deserves homage throughout the country. There are dozens of streets, squares and squares named after the Portuguese writer – But there is one that stands out above all others.
Southeast Asia news site Seasia. StatsOn June 11, the ranking of the 20 most beautiful streets in the world was released. The truth is Cities aren’t just sights or great beaches. Equally or more important are the blocks full of shops with local products, restaurants serving typical dishes or musicians with a guitar in hand that can be heard meters away. That is, a lively and colorful street can define a city’s culture well.
Unique architectural details, charm, and an abundance of pastel colors were factors that the magazine analyzed to be able to make the list. Portugal appears in fifth place. Rua Luís de Camões, in Águeda (Aveiro), also known as “The Street of Umbrellas”, has been chosen as one of the most beautiful places in the world And it’s not hard to see why.
For more than a decade, thousands of colorful parasols fill the streets of downtown Agueda each year. This is the most striking image of the destination – one that also earned the town in the Aveiro neighborhood a distinction on CNN as one of the most colorful places in the world.
It all started in 2012, within the scope of a prestigious local festival supported by the municipality of Agitágueda. A simple idea turned into an international success. Between music, performances and artwork, an installation called “Umbrella Sky” was created. On the main street of the city. Impatc Plan, the company that implemented the invention, emerged in 2007, “with a desire to take a unique position in today’s society saturated with communication”
Since that summer, history repeats itself every year: between July 1 and September 30, wonderful colorful parasols are installed over the street in the center of Agueda. As of 2017, wIt also began to arrive, in a special edition dedicated to the season, around Christmas: between December 1 and January 15. “In summer, it’s a colorful version and spreads across several streets in the city center, with colorful umbrellas that seem to float, but also other colorful art installations, such as murals,” the Impact Plan explained to NiT. In winter, colorful hats give way to a sky of white umbrellas all lit up, which brings the magic of Christmas to the street.
The idea of the umbrellas appearing to float in the air was inspired by Mary Poppins. The 1964 film tells the story of a near-perfect nanny who flies her magic parachute and performs other amazing skills. The character helps the two children of the Banks family find their lost joy and get closer to their father.
Rua Luís de Camões has residents, but there are also many shops. After all, “everything is starting to attract more people to that area, which is an initiative by Oguda Municipality to help fight the crisis and boost local commerce.”
Topping the list of the most beautiful streets in the world is Symy Harbor, in Greece, Acorn Street, in the United States, Bo Kaap, in Cape Town, and Caligon El Asry, in Morocco. Next, click through the gallery to see the entire top 20.
