US President Joe Biden placed his hand on his chest during the Indian anthem and was photographed shaking hands with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning during a visit by the Indian ruler to the United States of America. These two moments spark controversy on social media.
according to New York Post, Biden rolled the red carpet for Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister since 2014, as part of a state visit to bolster the alliance between Washington and New Delhi. When the first notes of the Indian anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” sounded, Biden took his right hand to his chest, and held it there for about 15 seconds. Then he slowly lowered it, apparently realizing that the bands weren’t playing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the United States national anthem.
Joe Biden descended from the podium, onto the red carpet, on his way again. US President Narendra Modi shook hands, forcing his wife, Jill Biden, to stand to the right of the Indian prime minister, who was in the middle of Monday.
“Seeing Biden’s gesture made me laugh, see how he waves his right hand after realizing that it is the national anthem of India,” says a netizen on social media.
Another user says: “Biden lost my vote and many of my friends.”
