Brazil is seeing an increase in denunciations and arrests related to labor similar to slavery, but it is not alone. The United States appears ahead in estimating the Global Slavery Index 2023, which was released on Wednesday (24) in London, by Walk Free, an international human rights organization that specializes in this matter.
The ranking marks the United States as one of the ten countries with the largest number of people in contemporary slavery in the world. In overall numbers, Americans appear in tenth place, with 1.1 million people in this state. The country is one place ahead of Brazil. which enslaves 1.05 million people.
See the order:
- India – 11 million
- China – 5.8 million
- North Korea – 2.6 million
- Pakistan – 2.3 million
- Russia – 1.9 million
- Indonesia – 1.8 million
- Nigeria – 1.6 million
- Türkiye – 1.3 million
- Bangladesh – 1.1 million
- United States – 1.1 million
- Brazil – 1.05 million
When considering the prevalence of slaves relative to population size, North Korea comes out on top, with 104.6 people living in slavery per thousand inhabitants. In Brazil, there are 5 people for every thousand.
The US response to the problem is much appreciated
An estimated 50 million people were living in modern-day slavery in 2021, per a survey released last year by the International Labor Organization in partnership with the International Organization for Migration and Walk Free.
The United States is seen as one of the countries that gave the strongest responses as a way to counteract the situation, showing up alongside the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal, Ireland, Norway, Spain and Sweden.
North Korea, Eritrea, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Equatorial Guinea, Russia, Gabon and Chad are seen as the least active.
Countries such as South Sudan, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria and Yemen were excluded from the survey because they are in a conflict situation, with governments struggling to put measures in place.
