Master Masahiro Sakurai, the living legend of Japanese evolution, believes that Super Smash Bros. It doesn’t sit well with the internet and he explains why in a recent video.
Speaking of the creation of Super Smash Bros. The first game in the series with online modes, Sakurai said that “online competition can make people lose their confidence” and in addition, technical issues can affect connectivity and response time detract from the experience.
“I think the internet and Smash Bros. don’t go well together. One of the best parts of Smash Bros. is how players can become champions among friends. But succumbing to online competition can cause people to lose confidence, which isn’t good.”
The simultaneous connection required in this type of experience can introduce technical issues and limit the people you can play with, since the closer one is, the better the connection. “Moreover, network latency often makes the experience very inconsistent,” the Japanese designer said.
Sakurai says that if he has to do it, it doesn’t matter what he thinks and he’ll do his job, especially since it might turn into something fun.
