In a match with little history, Toulouse did not give a chance against indifferent Nantes (5-1), thus winning the French Cup. Montagnier’s players decided the game before half-time, in an unforgettable display that fans are sure won’t soon forget.
Toulouse took the lead in the fourth minute, as defender Logan Costa responded in the best way to a corner that was executed by Branko van den Bomen. The 22-year-old jumped higher than anyone else and headed to the back of the net, which was being guarded by Alban Lafont.
Logan Costa would end up being one of the heroes of this game, striking again six minutes after the first goal. After a free kick, Stijn Spierings perfectly helped Cape Verde, who did not forgive, scoring two goals in the match.
Since the 23rd minute, a new main character has appeared in the fairy tale. Striker Thijs Dallinga broke through to the back of the opposition’s defence, receiving a superb pass from Suazo. The striker’s coldness drove Saint-Denis mad again.
Dallinga will not stay around. In a quick pass, the 22-year-old took advantage of Lafont’s incomplete save and Chaibi’s shot. A dream performance for the Dutchman, who scored 16 goals and provided three assists this season.
The Canaries were an apathetic team throughout the entire 90 minutes, showing no sign of reaction at any point in the match. Nantes’ backline – borrowed from Benfica’s right-winger Joao Vitor – showed many struggles to stem the unpredictability of Virtuous’s popularity. Blas and Abukhalal goals in the second half will not change the features of the match.
With this historic victory, Toulouse adds its second Coupe de France in its history, after the conquest in 1956/1957.
