“aPresident Joe Biden said in a video posted to Twitter that surrendering to Medicare should be a right, not a privilege.
The plan would allow “Dreamers” to access for the first time Medicaid coverage for people with limited means and Obamacare plans, approved in 2010, during Barack Obama’s presidency.
A White House source told EFE that the measures should go into effect at the end of this month.
The beneficiaries will be “Dreamers” who are welcomed under a DACA program approved in 2012 with the goal of protecting them from deportation and granting them permission to work and live temporarily in the United States.
When the changes announced take effect, the 590,000 people who currently benefit from DACA, according to September 2022 data from Citizenship and Immigration Services, will have access to Medicaid coverage from these programs.
Capitalizing on the launch of this new plan, Biden is back today to ask Congress to open the path to citizenship for DACA recipients.
“This is the only home they’ve ever known. They are our friends and co-workers. They study, work hard, open businesses, many of them served our country in the armed forces and many have been essential frontline workers during the pandemic,” he said.
In the video, Biden defended, “They are American in every way but on paper. It’s time for Congress to provide the ‘Dreamers’ with a path to citizenship.”
During the first two years of Biden’s term, Democrats had a majority in both houses of Congress, but were unable to garner enough votes to pass immigration reform.
Right now, the Republicans control the House of Representatives, and the odds of reform being passed are even lower.
