A Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova this Monday accused the United Kingdom of wanting to turn Ukraine into a “scorched earth” by supplying the Ukrainian armed forces with depleted uranium munitions.
“The UK wants to turn its territory into a scorched and wasteland by supplying Ukraine with depleted uranium munitions.. There will be no Russian, no Ukrainian, only silence. Like Pripyat and Chernobyl“, the Russian official wrote in Telegram, according to Russian state agency TASS.
In the same publication, Zakharova accused NATO of mass production and use of this type of munitions, and warned of the effects on the health of the military.
“To a large extent, operations with such munitions in the NATO group were carried out by Italian soldiers (…) The area of responsibility of Italian soldiers in Yugoslavia included the territories where more than half of all depleted uranium munitions were fired” , he said.
“The Serbs are the first victims and the Italians the second, studying how depleted uranium affects the personnel who use it,” he added.
It is worth recalling that last March, the United Kingdom announced its intention to supply depleted uranium munitions to Ukraine. In response, Vladimir Putin announced an agreement to install Russian tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.
