Honduras announced on Sunday that it was severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan, 11 days after indicating it would establish formal ties with Beijing.
The head of Honduran diplomacy was Enrique Reina “on the instructions of the President of the Republic [Xiomara Castro]It informed Taiwan of the decision to sever diplomatic relations” between the two regions, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Now only 13 countries officially recognize Taiwan.
This announcement comes two days after Rina’s visit to Beijing to discuss establishing bilateral diplomatic relations.
According to the “one China” principle, Beijing does not allow foreign countries to maintain diplomatic relations with Taipei. However, Al Jazeera has established international partnerships through other channels.
On the social network Twitter, on March 14, Xiomara Castro announced that he had asked Enrique Reina to establish official relations with China.
Honduras’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The government of the Republic of Honduras recognizes that there is only one China in the world, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government that represents all of China.”
“Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,” the ministry added, adding that it has pledged to date “not to establish relations or contacts of an official nature with Taiwan.”
