Former player Ricardo Carvalho, 44, is Roberto Martinez’s new assistant in the national team.
Ricardo Carvalho was the European Champion for Portugal in 2016. He made his debut in the national team led by Luiz Felipe Scolari on 11 October 2003, ending his international career with 89 appearances and 5 goals for Portugal. His last match was from corner kicks to the chest on June 22, 2016, in Hungary and Portugal (3-3), the third match in Group F of the European Championships in France.
At the beginning of 2011/12, he starred in a controversial episode, before a match against Cyprus left the training camp of the national team, protesting that Paulo Bento, then coach of the national team, did not put him on the starting line. -up in a pre-match training session to Nicosia, “on its own initiative and without reporting this absence to the Portuguese Football Federation Board or to the national team”, as disclosed, then, by the FPF. But this episode did not carry any weight when choosing federation officials, not least because of the return of Ricardo Carvalho to the national team in October 2014 with Fernando Santos.
Having ended his career with China’s Shanghai SIPG in 2017, the former defender has spoken out about it, claiming it was just something between him and Paulo Bento and presumably precipitating an impromptu exit to training camp in Obidos.
The former FC Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Monaco player was assistant to Andre Villas-Boas at Marseille in 2019/20 and 2020/21.
Remember, former goalkeeper Ricardo is also part of the new selector’s “staff”, but as a goalkeeper coach.
