All transport in Portugal – air, rail, metro and river – shut down in 2022 with fewer passengers remaining than in 2019, the last similar year without the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to preliminary results released on Wednesday, March 8, by the National Statistical Institute. (INE).
Compared to 2019, the number of passengers transported by air in 2022 decreased by 5.6%, while the number in transport by train and subway decreased by 2.1% and 19.3%, respectively. By boat, 16.8% more passengers were transported last year than in 2019.
Compared to 2021, a year still affected by movement restrictions, the growth last year was 121.7% in the number of passengers carried by plane, 42.1% by train, 58.5% by metro and 42.5% by boat.
With regard to the transportation of goods, the tonnage transported by air increased by 16.9% in 2022, while in sea transport it increased by 2.3%. Compared to 2019, the differences were again negative in these two methods, with a decrease of 5.8% and a negative of 0.4%, respectively.
By road, rail transport decreased by 3.2% in 2022 compared to 2021, and 3.6% less than in 2019; Ground transportation moved 2.2% lower compared to the previous year and 7.1% lower compared to the year prior to the pandemic.
And in terms of pipeline transportation, it “was up 28.3% compared to the previous year (+7.6% in 2021; -5.7% compared to 2019),” while in pipeline gas transportation “there was -if there was a decline in entry. (-4.3%; -0.1% in 2021; -7.6% compared to 2019) and Exit (-4.8%; + 0.3% in 2021; -7.5% compared to 2019), ”informs the National Institute of Statistics.
Carrying passengers by plane more than doubled
By plane, in 2022, 56.8 million passengers were transported and 217.6 thousand aircraft landed at national airports, an annual increase of 121.7% and 61.7%, respectively.
International passenger traffic increased by 137.9%, with an 80.8% share of total passengers, with the United Kingdom being the country with the largest number of departure and destination flights, regaining the first position lost in 2020 and 2021 to France now. He dropped to second place. Spain, Germany and Italy occupy the next positions in descending order.
On railways, the number of passengers carried reached 171.55 million in 2022, up 42.1% from last year, while the number of passengers on metro systems in Portugal rose 58.5% to 218 million.
However, these figures represent a decrease, in the train, of 2.1% compared to 2019, “with a particular focus on international traffic”, with a 51.5% decrease in the number of passengers, as determined by the National Institute of Statistics; and 19.3% by metre, compared to the full year prior to the pandemic.
