The company will equip a computer lab with the aim of training indigenous teachers.
With the aim of expanding access to technology in Brazil, Microsoft has signed a partnership to equip a computer lab at the headquarters of the Associação Terra Indígena Xingu – Atix. In addition to equipment, the company will provide training to train local educators so that the association has autonomy and can develop solutions that meet the needs of their communities through technology.
Microsoft Philanthropy Leader Lucia Rodriguez was in Xingu to participate in the Annual Assembly of Atix, a meeting that brings together chiefs of villages of indigenous lands to discuss topics related to the 16 peoples who inhabit the TIX. On this occasion, a donation agreement was signed that includes the supply of equipment. This will be the first phase of a partnership project between Microsoft and Atix, whose main focus is expanding access to technology and bringing digital literacy to isolated regions of Brazil.
“We believe that economic opportunity can and should include indigenous peoples. This initiative aims to advance the digital inclusion of the people of Xingu and give them the tools to gain the autonomy to develop technology solutions that meet their needs,” explains Lucia Rodriguez, Microsoft Philanthropy Lead.
The agreement is part of a larger initiative by Microsoft to empower indigenous peoples that also occurs in Australia, with Indigenous peoples, and in Canada, with three different peoples: First Nations, Inuits, and Métise. The company plans to expand to other American countries such as the United States and Mexico.
“We believe that technology training brings the potential to empower the indigenous people of Xingu. But we cannot depend on the white man for access to technology. We need to empower our people to use technology to meet the needs of indigenous peopleexplains Ianukulá Kaiabi Suia, President of Atix.
Through Mais Brasil, Microsoft seeks to support the country’s economic development from the perspective of three pillars: education, vocational training, and employability; Enabling the digital economy through technology, sustainable growth and social impact – the pillar of which this initiative is a part.
