The World Health Organization (WHO) released this Wednesday The latest online risk assessment bulletin of the Omicron XBB.1.5 variant for Covid-19, bearing in mind that this may be responsible for the increase in cases of the disease globally.
From October 22, 2022, to January 11, 2023, according to the World Health Organization, 5,288 cases of the XBB.1.5 variant were sequenced, reported in 38 countries. “Most of these sequences are from the United States (82.2%), the United Kingdom (8.1%) and Denmark (2.2%),” says the WHO.
The WHO Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) met on Day 5 to discuss the latest data on the variant under study and now states that “based on its genetic characteristics and preliminary growth estimates, XBB. 1.5 may contribute to an increase in new cases of infection.” .
However, the World Health Organization notes that the assessment is “low confidence”, as the growth estimates “are for one country only, the United States of America”,
Thus, WHO recommends that countries prioritize studies that allow to respond to uncertainties regarding the “growth in the number of cases, the ability to evade antibodies and the severity” of XBB.1.5 cases.
