Sleeping badly? You may be at an age where you are more likely to suffer from a poor night’s sleep
The quality of a night’s rest depends on age, reveals a new study involving 730,000 participants from 63 countries.
As the years go by, it becomes more difficult for you to sleep. After a certain age, a good night’s sleep becomes almost impossible. According to a study published on December 13 by various universities in France and the United Kingdom, people sleep less after age 33 and start sleeping more only after age 53. To come to these conclusions, experts from the University College London and East Anglia (in the United Kingdom), and the University of Lyon (France), surveyed more than 730,000 people living in 63 countries. In the paper, they explained, “The study revealed how sleep patterns change across the lifespan and how they differ between different countries.”
Volunteers who took part in the trial used an app called “Sea Hero Quest” for smartphones, developed by GLITCHERS in collaboration with two universities in the United Kingdom. The app was launched in 2016 with an aim to collect data for Alzheimer’s disease research. The game helps researchers understand the mental process of navigating a three-dimensional world, one of the first skills lost by people diagnosed with dementia. “Sea Hero Quest” also asks questions related to demographic characteristics and sleep patterns of different users.
The researchers concluded that male participants slept an average of 7.01 hours per night, while women slept 7.5 minutes more. They also found that younger users — with a minimum age of 19 — slept more. However, between the ages of 20 and 30, sleep duration gradually decreases and stabilizes by the age of 50. Then it increases again.
Researchers found that 33- to 53-year-olds slept less, regardless of gender, country or education level. The demands of personal life, such as work and family, are the main justifications.
