DrAfter two weeks of rain and some bouts of flooding wreaking havoc, particularly in the Lisbon and Portalegre region, many Portuguese are preparing to travel to relatives’ homes for the Christmas season. Although the rain recedes, the rain will not subside on festive days.
Christmas comes and brings with it a cool front surface with ripples, which will bring rain “heavy and continuous at times in the north of the Montejunto-Estrella mountain system, especially on the coast, where they are less frequent in the southern region”. According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the winds will also intensify between the 24th (Saturday) and the 26th (Monday), “becoming moderate from the southern quarter, sometimes strong and with gusts on the west coast and in the highlands”.
As for temperatures, they will remain above average at this time of the year, with no major changes expected in the coming days.
Maximums fluctuate between 10 and 19 °C and minimum temperatures between 6 and 15 °C, with the highest values on the coast and the lowest in the north and central inland.
In general, “the sea waves on the west coast will be from the northwest with 3 to 3.5 meters to the north of Cabo Raso and 2 to 3 meters to the south of that cape, becoming waves from the west of 24. On the coast south the waves will be from the southwest with a height of 1 metre, and rises to two meters on the 25th,” notes a statement from the IPMA on the weather for the continent in the week of Christmas.
Until Friday, the weather in mainland Portugal will be affected by “an anticyclone located between mainland Portugal and Madeira and by the presence of a hot and humid air mass” that will lead to periods of light rain, more frequent on the coast. North of Cape Mondego.
And for the rest of this week, fog or mist formation is also expected during the night, which gradually fades during the morning period, especially in the south, north and central interior.
