Rural producers in Mato Grosso do Sul are being instructed to export products such as cassava, tapioca, lemon and guava starch. The assistance is being provided through the AgroBR project, an initiative promoted by the Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex Brasil).
“We create a virtual portfolio for the company in five languages and offer various training courses for foreign trade for free,” explains Natalia Alves, regional coordinator of the project.
According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), the agricultural business of Mato Grosso do Sul, as of September 2022, exported 5.98 billion US dollars. This figure represents an increase of 15% compared to the same period in the previous year, which amounted to 5.19 billion US dollars. In September, the country sold 644.3 million US dollars. An increase of 32% compared to the same month in 2021.
Mato Grosso do Sul was the second largest exporter of cassava starch in 2021. At US$8.3 million, the state accounts for 32% of all exported products. The main destinations were the United States, Paraguay, Spain, Colombia and Bolivia.
Although tapioca represents a much lower value compared to starch, the country led in exports. Shipments are valued at US$1.7 million, and represent 38% of sales. Among the product access points are the United States (US$1.1 million), Mexico (US$473,000), and Ecuador (US$91,000).
According to Natalia Alves, there is a great potential for the production and export of lemons. “Although it needs to develop the infrastructure, the country is able to develop in that direction, and even more so with increased production of Tahiti lemons,” he says. Last year, Brazil exported 125 million US dollars.
Guava is another fruit that also has potential, notes the Brazilian Agriculture and Livestock Confederation (CNA). In 2021, the country shipped about US$1 million in product, and the main destinations were the UK, France, Canada, the Netherlands and Portugal.
