yJulia Roberts revealed that Martin Luther King Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King paid hospital expenses for his birth, as the actress’ parents at the time were unable to do so.
During a conversation with Gayle King, the artist explained that her parents became friends with royalty when they lived in Atlanta and ran a drama school.
“One day, Coretta called my mom and asked if her kids could be part of the school because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept their kids,” says Roberts, recalling the racial segregation that existed in the 1960s with regard to blacks.
“My mother replied, ‘Of course, let’s go,'” she recalls. “And they became friends.”
It is reported that at that time a member of the Ku Klux Klan blew up a car outside one of the theaters of Betty and Walter Roberts in response to the fact that Martin’s daughter Yolanda was chosen for a role in which she accepted a Caucasian actor.
Gayle King described Roberts’ parents’ decision as “extraordinary”.
