In Brazil, on Friday (28th) Public Service Day is celebrated. At the Municipal Urban Cleaning Authority (Emlur), employees have something to celebrate, with the daily care they receive. In addition to the provision of health services, with medical, nursing, dental and psychological care, there is social support, with the help of services from the municipal health network and guidance on access to social security, whether to receive assistance or to retire.
According to Emlur Director, Ricardo Veloso, the implementation of services is a way to take care of workers. “We take care of those who take care of the city. Without urban clean-up measures, such as groups and caretakers, what would people’s quality of life and health conditions be like?”, he asks.
In the Department of Social Care (Dibs), social workers monitor workers who are bedridden, in hospital, or who need some health assistance. “When the occupational physician at Emlur sees the employee and assesses the need for surgery, we activate the municipal health network to perform the necessary care,” says Dibes coordinator, Damiana Rodrigues.
Another social service is Social Security Guidelines, which are provided by an attorney at Dibes. General Services assistant Zuleide Martins de Brito, 59, sought to research the sector for information about her retirement. “I came to see if I can retire now and have been well taken care of. Now I just want to work for Jesus,” he says with a smile.
body and mind Emlur’s Psychological and Social Sector provides individual psychological care to employees and also performs group activities. According to coordinator, Shinya Ramalho, the Women’s Therapeutic Experiences Cluster was created, with activities to provide moments of reflection and personal growth.
Server Niedja Fernandes is one of the participants. According to her, the group provides a space for women to have a voice and be heard. “We talk about our problems and relieve our pain with the solidarity of our colleagues.”
Campaigns – In addition to static actions, Emlur implements health care warning campaigns. As Emlur’s Department of Occupational Medicine coordinator, Mariana Miranda, campaigns promote awareness of self-care. “We’ve campaigned on Pink October and are preparing for Blue November.”
Safety in the workplace – All urban cleaning work is carried out in uniform consisting of trousers, shirt and hat. Personal protective equipment also includes plastic gloves and leather shoes, which can prevent cuts and scrapes while performing activities.
