The son of a Russian governor was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa airport on Monday after a US warrant accusing him and four other Russians of money laundering and sanctions evasion.
His father said in Telegram that Artem Os, the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk region, Alexander Os, is facing politically motivated charges.
“The supply of petroleum products, general equipment and technical vehicles, which are freely sold and bought around the world, were suddenly declared illegal by the US authorities,” the governor said. “And why? Just because it was done for the good of Russia.” The political implications of these accusations are clear.”
An appeals court in Milan on Thursday upheld the warrant and set a date for Friday when Uss will tell the court whether he agrees to extradite him.
If he objects to the arrest warrant, it will take several weeks for the handover to complete.
However, his lawyers can request house arrest in lieu of imprisonment, according to judicial sources.
Attorney Vinicio Nardo met the USS in prison on Wednesday.
