Authorities in the United States and the United Kingdom reported an increase in Covid-19 cases last week linked to a new subtype of Ômicron, BA.4.6. There are already 76 registrations in at least 70 countries, including Brazil.
According to the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the agency equivalent to Anvisa in Brazil, data released on Friday (9) showed that the incidence of positive diagnoses related to BA.4.6 increased from 3.3% in the week to August 14. 9% in England.
In the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 9% of recently sequenced coronavirus samples were associated with subspecies.
BA.4.6 is an offshoot of the BA.4 subvariant – currently co-circulating with BA.5 – with mutations in the spike protein associated with the immune locus of protection generated by vaccines or previous infections.
This Wednesday (14), the technical director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Maria Van Gerkov, said that other waves of Covid caused by other subtypes of the coronavirus should occur in the future, but this should not translate into an increase.
