AMD Radeon RX 6600M Desktop Cards Now Selling For Under $200
A while ago, we reported on the NVIDIA RTX 30 Rename your laptop GPUs As complete desktop boards sold on Chinese websites. It looks like these companies have recently started selling the Radeon RX 6000 series for mobile devices as well.
One might wonder why anyone would buy a laptop GPU to function as a desktop card, but in fact there is a very good reason. These cards are much cheaper than desktop models. What most likely happens here is that some companies buy laptop GPUs in bulk, which are cheaper than desktop PCs, and then install them on desktop boards.
In the end, models like the Radeon RX 6600M are offered for $180 to $189, while the “real” desktop RX 6600 is priced at $269 in the same stores. That’s a pretty big difference for almost the same specs.
And speaking of specs, the RX 6600M is basically the same model as a desktop GPU. Both have a Navi 23 GPU and have very similar boost clocks in the 2.4-2.5GHz range. There isn’t much difference in power, as the 100W mobile graphics processing unit (TGP) and the 132W desktop card (TBP) come in. Of course, they both come with 8GB of GDDR6 memory on the 128-bit bus and at the same speed of 14Gbps.

According to the reviews MykonstHowever, it is still possible to overclock your laptop’s GPU, which could result in stable 2.5GHz clocks. However, memory overclocking doesn’t seem to work because the card immediately goes into safe mode. GPU-Z software confirms that this is a mobile GPU and is fully compatible with AMD drivers:
These companies seem to simply be reusing cards that would have been used in the RX 6600 desktop models. The RX 6600M laptop has roughly the same GPU, same configuration, and even memory. In most cases, this procedure will be as simple as installing a new GPU and updating your laptop’s BIOS.
Although the cards sold on Chinese websites have full PCIe 4.0 x16 slots, they are clearly not connected to 16 threads. Desktop and mobile GPUs are limited to 8 lanes.
Needless to say, these models are not officially supported by AMD, but since the drivers only check the PCI GPU hardware ID, they will be detected as portable and the drivers should work independently. These cards are also much cheaper than the desktop models, but they come with a limited warranty and are likely to be subject to additional import duties.
