Opinion polls published on Friday showed that the center-right coalition surrounding the Brotherhood of Italy led by Giorgia Meloni has a clear advantage in the September 25 elections.
The latest opinion polls allowed before the September 25 elections were published by the country’s major media outlets, such as Il Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica and SkyTG24 television network, and showed that the alliance would get about 45% of support, while the brothers of Italy would solidify as the party most vote.
This voting intention, if realized, could push the coalition of conservative parties to occupy more than half the seats, since the Italian electoral system favors large blocs.
One-third of the seats in both houses are determined in single-member constituencies, where citizens vote for one candidate and the most supported candidate wins the seat.
A result like the one predicted by the polls could give this bloc great strength, because the support of two-thirds of the House is enough to be able to amend the constitution without holding a referendum.
Moreover, this is one of the goals of the formation of Meloni, who has already stated that he wants to change the current parliamentary system to a presidential one.
The Italian center-left, led by the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, wants to avoid this constitutional change, even though the scenario defined by opinion polls gives them little chance of winning.
Polls have stressed that voting intentions can change a lot in more than two weeks before the election date, as many voters are hesitant and turnout is expected to be 65%, an all-time low.
After the collapse of the government of Mario Draghi, with great technocratic weight, the Italians got tired of politics.
Italy was forced to call an election after the Five Star Movement, the most voted party in the 2018 elections, withdrew its support for the prime minister.
Giuseppe Conte’s party rose again in the opinion polls and came in third, behind the Italian Brotherhood and the Democratic Party.
