Indian billionaire Gautam Adani became the third richest person in the world, taking last place on the podium led by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos taking the silver. In doing so, Adani overtook the president of luxury goods group LVMH (Louis Vuitton), Bernard Arnault, and became the first Asian person to hold the position.
Adani’s fortune is currently estimated at $137 billion (€136 billion) according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The Indian billionaire surpasses the fortunes of Musk and Bezos, with a value of 251 billion and 153 billion dollars (250 billion and 152 billion euros) respectively.
At the beginning of April, Indian Gautam Adani joined a very limited group of billionaires with a fortune exceeding $100 billion.
Gautam Adani controls India’s largest port, Mundra Port, and together with French businessman Bernard Arnault, is the only non-American with fortunes of at least $100 billion.
Al-Adani controls several projects ranging from port, mining and space projects, as his fortune increased by nearly $90 billion (€89 billion) during the pandemic. Shares of some Adani companies are up more than 1,000% since June 2020.
The Indian billionaire also owns Abbott Point, a controversial coal mining project in Australia, and his Carmichael coal mine is one of the largest in the world. It also acquired a 74% stake in Mumbai International Airport, India’s second busiest airport, in September 2020.
