The Georgian Ministry of Defense, quoting the Spanish news agency, said that NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) maneuvers are taking place at the Vaziani base, 25 kilometers east of Tbilisi, and military personnel from the countries are participating. Also among the participants is a multinational team from Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.
They are witnessing for the first time the NATO exercises, which are taking place for the sixth time, by the armed forces of Sweden and Japan.
“The purpose of the exercises is to increase the level of interaction and combat readiness of Georgia, the United States and other countries, in order to ensure stability and security in the Black Sea region,” the country’s Defense Ministry said.
Some of the heavy equipment for the exercises delivered to Georgia came from US military bases in Europe.
The exercises will be led by the Georgian Army and the US Command for Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF).
As with Ukraine, Georgia also promised to join NATO in 2008, without specifying the specific conditions for the country’s entry into the Western defense bloc.
