Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to cancel Batgirl, which was announced in 2021 as part of an effort to create content tailored for HBO Max, a matter of reprioritizing theatrical premieres.
The $90 million movie, starring Leslie Grace and directed by duo Adel Elaraby and Bilal Falah (Ms. Marvel), won’t see the light of day, not even on a streaming service like Warner Bros. Discovery wants to focus on blockbuster films with global appeal that open their doors in cinemas.
Batgirl was intended for the direct release of HBO Max and not as a theatrical movie. The project has run over budget due to COVID-19-related delays, but filming has already ended and is now in post-production, something that is sure to leave many confused about Warner Bros.’ decision. Discovery.
Leslie Grace played Barbara Gordon, Batgirl, while JK Simmons played Jim Gordon, not forgetting that Michael Keaton is back to dress up as Batman again. Also among the big names is Brendan Fraser.
In April 2022, Leslie Grace told Variety that she was already thinking about what they could do in a sequel, but now it was announced that the film would not be released.
