Sources close to the case told AFP that the security forces killed, on Wednesday, a young man in the city of Dover (eastern France) after he killed five members of his family.
One source said the suspect was armed with a pistol and machete on Tuesday evening at a family home in Dover, where authorities raided him in the early hours of Wednesday.
Christian Limousin, the mayor of a nearby village, said the suspect killed five members of his family, including three children, two girls aged 17 and 15 and a 5-year-old boy. The identity of the victims has not yet been confirmed.
“The negotiators tried to contact him overnight, to no avail,” he added. Five family members of the suspect were later found dead inside the property.
The family had lived in that house since July 2020 and “began to integrate into the area,” according to Mayor Christian Limousin.
The suspect was a 22-year-old who worked for a fast food company in a nearby town, said a local resident who knew the family.
This tragedy is one of the bloodiest family murders in France in recent years. In October 2020, a man murdered his wife, two children and two nephews in Noisy-le-Sec, northeast of Paris.
“I learned with horror of the tragedy that occurred last night in Dover in my department. My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones,” Representative Ein Olga Giffrent said on Twitter.
