Govt cases in the UK have risen by more than 30%, with statistics showing that about 2.3 million people were affected last week.
The National Statistics Office said the increase was driven by Omicron’s BA4 and BA.5 subtypes, with the latest data showing that 1 in 30 people in the UK had covid in the week ended June 24.
This equates to 2.3 million infections – up 32% from 1.7 million in the previous week.
This is the highest estimate of weekly infections since late April, but it was less than 4.9 million at the end of March.
This follows new data from the UK Health Safety Agency released on Thursday, which shows a sharp increase in the number of covets over the age of 80, with covid case rates in all ages and regions in the UK.
Intensive care admissions are also on the rise in the elderly, and more outbreaks are being reported in nursing homes, the UKHSA said.
“Covit-19 is not gone,” said Mary Ramsay, director of UKHSA’s medical programs.
