In an update on the sanctions, the United Kingdom announced, on Wednesday, the imposition of sanctions against the United Kingdom Russian oligarch Vladimir Potanin, known as the “King of Nickel” of the country and known as the richest businessman in Russia.
The billionaire was included in the latest round of sanctions that included other well-known names in the business world, as well as financial companies and other entities, according to a government press release accessed by Reuters.
“Potanin continues to amass wealth while supporting the Putin regime, acquiring Rosbank and shares in Tinkoff Bank in the period since the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” the statement read.
The communications agency reports that the oligarch is one of the richest people in Russia, although his net worth is largely based on his 36% stake in Nornickel, from which he received the name “King of Nickel”.
The British government’s justification for the inclusion of sanctions relates to the benefits it receives or the support it provides to the Russian government to control Rusbank. Reuters cited the bank’s “doing business in the financial services sector, a sector of strategic importance to the Russian government.”
This Wednesday, it was also announced that Potanin has joined the list of those who are moving – in fact, sailing – their valuable assets to Dubai to evade sanctions, and move their luxury yacht, which is worth $300 million.
