In Windows 11, the Start menu has a new design, no longer using Live Tiles to look more like a traditional app launcher with fixed icons and a simple design with rounded corners.
The problem is that it’s not perfect and although it rarely happens, it can sometimes crash. If this problem occurs, the user can restart the list using at least three different methods: via Task Manager, command line, and PowerShell.
In this guide for Windows 11, we are going to show you how you can reset the Start Menu using one of the three methods mentioned earlier.
Resetting the main menu via Task Manager
Operations tab
Right-click on the Home button and choose the Task Manager option. Alternatively, press the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.
Click on the Processes tab.
Right-click on the “Start” process and then choose the “End task” option.
Then the process is automatically restarted by Windows, which solves the problem.
Details tab
Right-click on the Home button and choose the Task Manager option. Alternatively, press the key combination CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.
Click on the Details tab.
Right-click on the “StartMenuExperienceHost.exe” process and then choose the “End task” option.
Then the process is automatically restarted by Windows, which solves the problem.
Restart the main menu via command line
Click the “Start” button and type “command line”. Choose the “Run as administrator” option.
Type the following command and hit enter (you can copy and paste from here):
Taskkill /im StartMenuExperienceHost.exe /f
Then the process is automatically restarted by Windows, which solves the problem.
Restart the main menu via PowerShell
Restart the service
Click the “Start” button and type “PowerShell”. Choose the “Run as administrator” option.
Type the following command and hit enter (you can copy and paste from here):
Stop the process -Name “StartMenuExperienceHost” -Force
As soon as you press the enter key, the service that is running the Start menu is stopped and restarted automatically.
Reset the Home menu
Click the “Start” button and type “PowerShell”. Choose the “Run as administrator” option.
Type the following command and hit enter (you can copy and paste from here):
Get AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost | Reset-AppxPackage
After pressing the enter key, all the components that make up the Home menu will be reset to their default values, solving any problems that may exist.
