Mora Tabajoz from Manaus City CouncilThursday 26/5 started a series of courses for pregnant women and their companions. 15 places will be provided per month for pregnant women who will participate in the exchange of information about pregnancy, childbirth, the puerperium (the postpartum period) and breastfeeding with specialists from the unit’s multidisciplinary team.
To participate, pregnant women must request to be registered with the Basic Health Unit (UBS) where they provide prenatal care, if the unit is associated with Moura Tapajóz. It is preferable for a pregnant woman to participate in the cycle with a partner, a family member or a friend who is also with her during childbirth and the puerperium.
“In the course, we have doctors, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists and psychologists on our team who give information and advice to pregnant women about pregnancy and the postpartum cycle, focusing not only on the practical and physiological aspect of the moment, but also on the social aspect and feelings of pregnancy and motherhood,” explains the director of the maternity hospital , obstetrician Nubia Pereira da Cruz.
The meeting, appropriate for women in the third trimester of pregnancy, is theoretically based on the recommendations of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), which focuses on the “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding”, from the Brazilian Standard of Marketing. From Food for Infants and Young Children (NBCAL), Appropriate Care for Women, Federal Law No. 11108/2005 (The Companion and Responsible Parenting Act).
The following topics will be covered at the meeting: Emotional health during pregnancy. when to go to the maternity hospital: signs and symptoms of labor and types of childbirth; immunization; newborn care; breastfeeding; the rights of a pregnant woman; Physical therapy before and during labour.
Social worker Luiana Alencar de Mello, one of the course organizers, reports that the activity gathers important information, based on good practice and current scientific evidence, so that labor and delivery can be configured as a positive experience for the pregnant woman and her family’s support network.
“Pregnancy is a period of profound transformations for a woman, both in terms of her body and her emotions. So, this is a unique opportunity for pregnant women to gain knowledge, express their feelings, share experiences and clarify doubts through the expertise and experience of the professionals running the course,” he highlights.
