The driver of economic growth in 2022 will be tourism, and the demand for Portugal as a destination has led many airlines to boost their operations at Portuguese airports, especially Lisbon. ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal says that demand in recent months puts Portuguese airports above the European average. But hoteliers are so concerned about delays in the construction of the new airport in Lisbon that the mayor, Carlos Moedas, says “we need an airport. If it’s in one place or another, this has to be a technical decision, but the airport must move forward, from For everyone’s interest.”
What is certain is that, with or without an airport, the tourism figures are very satisfactory for the government. “What is happening in tourism is a reason for great joy,” the Minister of Economy said last week. “The Bank of Portugal estimates that in terms of revenue, this year tourism can secure close to 16 billion euros, about 85% of what we achieved in 2019,” Antonio Costa Silva noted. He highlighted the demand for visitors from the United Kingdom and Germany, but above all from the United States.
