“It is very unfortunate that the contractual delivery of natural gas has been suspended. But we have taken care to prepare for this situation,” said Gasum’s General Manager Mika Wiljanin in a statement, stressing that “there will be no disruption to the gas distribution network.”
According to the Finnish company, the largest distributor of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Nordic countries, from Saturday and throughout the summer, it will supply its customers with natural gas from other suppliers via the Baltic Connector pipeline.
It also indicated that the network of gas supply stations will continue to operate normally.
Gazum warned on Tuesday that it refuses to pay for the gas it buys from Gazprom in rubles, as Gazprom is asking its European customers, and announced that it would take the case to international arbitration.
Last April, Gazprom Gazprom and other European energy companies demanded to start paying for gas in rubles instead of euros, on the orders of the Kremlin to circumvent part of the financial sanctions imposed by the European Union in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press conference that Russia will not supply Finland with gas for free, after the company refused to pay in rubles.
Jassum, which is owned by the Finnish state, is also the largest supplier of biogas in the Nordic countries with operations in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Germany.
Finland imported about 2,200 million cubic meters of natural gas in 2021, 92% from Russia, although this fuel represents only 5% of the total energy consumed in the Nordic country.
