Data from government immunization programs show that influenza vaccination coverage in Sergipe is not in line with the expectations of the State Department of Health (SES).
In this new phase of the vaccination campaign for priority groups, it is estimated that 527,922 people will be vaccinated, but so far only 208,774 people have been vaccinated, which is equivalent to 39.55% of the vaccination coverage.
The Minister of State for Health, Mircea Vitosa, warns the residents of Sergipe of the importance of vaccination in the fight against influenza, especially for groups considered at risk.
“It is alarming to see that the population is not responding well to the call for vaccination, and the result of that will certainly be an increase in cases, which can progress to deteriorating conditions and even deaths,” said Mircea Vitosa.
Details of the priority groups show that coverage is lowest for pregnant and postpartum women, with just over 10% and 9%, respectively.
Regarding children, there are currently 149,446 children aged 6 months to less than 5 years, but only 35,737 have been vaccinated against influenza with a coverage rate of 23.91%.
Another group in decline is health professionals, with only 41.74% of them vaccinated, but the situation is more serious for teachers, as only 15% of them have been vaccinated, and finally the elderly who have been vaccinated so far only 53%. of those over 60 years of age have been vaccinated.
For Mircea Vitusa, the highest priority groups are the elderly and require more attention because of this.
And he considered that “among the priority groups, the elderly deserve more concern because they are more vulnerable to infection and exacerbation of influenza.”
