Residents of the Castellano neighbourhood, in Peritiba-Mirim, have a basic health unit that they have never been able to use. And now what’s bad is made worse by sabotage.
The health unit opened in 2016 but was never used by residents. The public building was still vandalized. The vandals broke the glass entrance door and windows and are still entering the place.
Rural producer Camilo Expedito dos Santos is a resident of the area and closely monitors all this problem at the Castellano Sanitary Unit.
“The current mayor removed the guards who were here. So, since there were no guards anymore, this area was more deserted than it used to be. That’s why there was this act of sabotage. [o prédio] In an irregular area, this place has been abandoned for a long time, since 2015. At that time, unfinished business was opened and in an irregular area. ”
The Castellano district is further from the municipal centre. Housewife Kelsa Gonsalves says those who live in the area are having difficulties getting medical care.
“People who are in some kind of pain should ask a neighbor to take it. [em uma unidade de saúde]. It’s sad, because the gas station is just around the corner.”

“Deliver medicines and do tests. What we have is a huge shortage of specialists in this field. You need to take a test, and you need to go to Mogi. You need to go to a specialist, you have to go to Mogi or São Paulo. We don’t have a mammogram, and we don’t have Any kind of ultrasound, and we don’t have a psychiatrist.”
According to the city council, a bidding process is underway to hire a company to renovate this health unit as well as all other units in the municipality. The government also said it would beef up security at the site to prevent further acts of vandalism.
A few days ago, the city’s mayor recorded a video clip in front of the health unit and posted it on social media.
“Unfortunately, this tender is deserted. What do you mean deserted? No company has appeared to perform the necessary service for the installation of the Castellano gas station. I want to share the good news here. Health of Beritba Mirim.”
In March of last year, the Diario TV press was on site and showed the state of abandonment of the health unit. At the time, the concern was even greater, as it was a critical moment for the epidemic and the search for medical care was great.
“We have to move from here to go to the center and sometimes we are not served either,” said housewife Ana Maria Aparecida Cunha, in a report broadcast by Diário TV on March 15, 2021.
While the space has not been renovated, residents expect the city to take an interest in public heritage and offer more health services.
“The mayor must explain to the residents of Peritiba Mirim why he has built this work in a place where it was not supposed to be built, and why, up to the present time, he has spent nearly 800,000 and has not completed this work,” Camilo said. .
The municipality of Peritiba Mirim said in a note that the value of the investment to build the unit in 2014 amounted to 534,000 Brazilian riyals. The health center was handed over at the end of 2016, but according to the city council, the 2017 administration did not prepare the place for work.
The municipal administration said that it will carry out the necessary reforms to activate the unit. The value will only be released after the bidding process, which includes all health units in the municipality, is over.
