The UK government is proposing new action for apps distribution sites that could create rules for locations such as the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
According to the proposed motion The UK Department for Digital, Cultural, Media and Sports (DCMS) aims to develop a set of rules that focus on protecting the nation’s users and maintaining the security and privacy of their device.
DCMS specifically cites that the new rules will restrict their app distribution platforms to companies such as Apple, Google, Amazon, Hawaii, Microsoft and Samsung. However, these rules apply not only to these companies, but to almost all online App Stores on any device.
One of the rules states that there should be dedicated sections in the App Store to report security vulnerabilities in available applications, along with data collection and privacy information that is more accessible to users.
It is important to check why applications have access to personal information such as contacts or exact location. Programmers also have the ability to provide additional feedback to companies on how to improve the security of online platforms.
The goal is to create ways to have more control over the malicious or maliciously modified applications available on these sites.
For now, this is a proposal that will be analyzed in more detail on June 29th. Then, it will be evaluated whether it would be beneficial to vote for the release by the local government.
