Madiran is set to run again in the UK’s municipal elections this Thursday. Diego Rodriguez, 32, is a restaurant entrepreneur and is running for the Conservative Party for the Bridgewater Chamber, the same party as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
In 2018 he became the first Portuguese immigrant in the UK to be elected ‘Mayor’ from the city of Bridgewater in the southwest of England.
Diogo Rodrigues told the DIÁRIO that he is currently the 2nd Deputy Leader of the Sedgemoor District Council and Deputy Leader of the Bridgewater City Council and Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
“But for my part in Somerset, the majority belong to the Conversation Party, which may change due to the current political situation in the country.”
Diego Rodriguez, local election candidate
“I hope my party can win this election with one or two more representatives in the House.” That, he recalls, is the last time his party won with four people. “But since my part of Somerset is mostly part of the Conversation Party, this may change due to the current political situation in the country,” he explained.
The Conservative Party lost to the Labor Party in the last municipal election.
Diego came to England with his parents about 30 years ago. His mother is from Camacha and his father is from Funchal, he told us that politics has always fascinated him in the hope that he will continue to give his best to the Bridgewater community.
In these local elections, at least nine Portuguese candidates are candidates for the British local elections.
