Russia warned Monday of the possibility of US nuclear weapons being placed on the territory of Poland, which was suggested by Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
“The proposed measures can only lead to an increase in tension on the mainland,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference.
In an interview published in the Sunday issue of the German newspaper Die Welt, Kaczynski stated that Poland is ready to host US nuclear warheads and has called for that country’s forces to be reinforced on NATO’s eastern flank, to prevent a Russian attack, after the invasion of Ukraine.
“The soldiers of the US nuclear power are the most powerful factor when it comes to preventing Russia from attacking NATO countries and those that provide us with greater security,” the PiS leader justified.
Jaroslav Kaczynski also suggested increasing the presence of US forces in Europe from 100,000 to 150,000 soldiers, half of whom should be permanently deployed in Eastern European countries, on the border with Russia.
The Polish prime minister concluded in the interview that “it will be a clear signal to Moscow, which means that the NATO leadership will also be present in the east.”
