Despite losing the lead the day before, Joao Almeida (UAE) finished off the Catalunya Volta with the best result ever for a Portuguese cyclist, taking third overall, 52 seconds behind the winner after completing the seventh and final step.
The winner was Colombian Sergio Higueta (Bura) – who was also with the youth jersey – ahead of Ecuadorean Richard Carapaz (Ineos), who was 16 seconds away. On Saturday’s stage, there was an attack by Carapaz, who won the stage, and Higuita, who changed the classification and took the lead.
