On the morning of Sunday, March 13, Russia bombed the Yavoriv military base, a base where Nuno Machado and three other former Portuguese soldiers were enlisted.
On Monday, March 7, the group left for Ukraine to fight Russian forces on a volunteer basis.
During the day, the family and friends of the Portuguese citizens tried to establish contact but to no avail: “I called three of them, and in fact, about six or seven hours ago… they are not online on social media. I find it very strange [não ter contacto com eles]. I have already sent several messages to all of them, and so far, I have not received any response.” – revealed Sofia Markelov, the Ukrainian national and sister of the driver who took the group to Poland.
In the 8 o’clock newspaper From TVI, José Alberto Carvalho ended up receiving confirmation, on air, that the ex-soldiers are safe: “They are fine, the four of them. This is the information we just obtained and confirmed.” – He said.
In the footnote information, TVI reinforced: “The Portuguese are at the base that was attacked and in good health.” – It can be read. However, CNN Portugal also advanced in the news.
