Stress and sleepless nights cause major effects on the skin, such as premature aging, as well as affect mental health. Many insomnia problems are caused by the update, the use of screens and restless routine has become a part of many people’s lives.
Why can stress affect the skin?
In an interview with L’Officiel, a dermatologist with the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, explains why stress affects the skin. “In moments of stress and anxiety, the body releases a greater amount of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, which promotes an inflammatory state in the skin tissues, thus helping to age the skin with the consequent appearance of spots, sagging and wrinkles.”
Another problem with stress on the skin is its effect on the microbiome. “A growing area of research shows how our commensal microbes – the original inhabitants of the bacteria, viruses and fungi that colonize our skin – improve our health.” says another dermatologist, who is a member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
And sleepless nights?
The plastic surgeon, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, told how stress and poor sleep quality can contribute to aging skin. “During sleep cells regenerate and free radicals are eliminated”, He explains.
How do we combat these problems?
Poorly sleeping nights contribute to swelling, that is, the consumption of at least two liters of water per day is of great importance. “Coconut water and green tea are options too. But always remember to control the amount of sodium in your meals: it contributes to fluid retention. And watch out for packaged juices, which are also high in sodium in their formula,” says the doctor.

Physical exercises are also necessary to relieve stress, as well as to improve swelling. “The contraction of the muscles themselves actually contributes to fluid drainage. Combine exercise and a balanced diet, and increase the consumption of cabbage, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, as these vegetables improve the elimination of toxins. This will benefit the whole body in reducing swelling.” It is calculated.
To help fight these effects on the skin, it is possible to use products with active and natural substances, such as pomegranate oil, which is a powerful antioxidant that strengthens the skin’s immunity and fights free radicals. Dermatologists also point out treatments that can be done around the eyes and mouth to stop aging.
