Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday made a “desperate plea” to US senators to send more planes to fight the Russian invasion, after receiving the promise of more military aid.
In a video conference with members of the US Congress, Zelensky renewed his call for more combat aircraft to counter the advance of Russian forces into Ukraine, and also suggested that the United States stop buying crude oil from Moscow.
In response, the Ukrainian president received a promise that the United States would continue to help Kyiv militarily and financially.
“We will quickly release $10 billion (about nine billion euros) to help the Ukrainian people,” said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.
“We are united in support of UkraineRepublican Senator Steve Danes added, stressing that his party would not object to White House plans to continue helping Ukraine with military materials and financial packages.
Zelensky called for tougher economic sanctions against Russia, including a ban on Russian oil and gas imports and the suspension of Russia’s Visa and MasterCard credit cards.
Ukraine’s president used a videoconference session with members of the US Congress to ask for help persuading Eastern European countries to supply him with “planes made in Russia,” according to Chuck Schumer’s account.
Last Sunday, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, already promised that EU countries would be ready to deliver Russian-made MiG fighter jets, which Ukrainian pilots know how to fly.
However, countries with this type of combat aircraft – including Bulgaria, Poland and Slovakia – have shown resistance to their availability.
